EP.48 James Wood on Surviving Serious Injury and Changing People’s Lives Through His Story

Particularly when we’re young, dumb and full of, well, let’s say enthusiasm, it’s easy to think that we’re bullet proof. But through his story, James Wood, is opening people’s eyes to the possibility and how to avoid a life-altering accident.

Each Wednesday, join me, Peter Finn, managing director of FACE Contracting, as I navigate the ups and downs of the mining industry with forward-thinking professionals from all walks of life. If you’re involved in the mining industry in any way – whether you’re a lifer or a high-school student looking to make the leap – Full Production is the podcast for you.

My guest is safety trainer and speaker James Wood. James is a former mining fitter, whose life changed drastically after a traumatic injury on site left him a paraplegic in his early 20s. By his own admission he stuffed up, and for the past twenty years he’s made it his mission to try and prevent it happening to other people by sharing his story.

As you’ll hear, he shares his story with a lot of humour and generosity. I think you’ll agree it’s both inspiring and impactful. And I’m sure there’s a bunch of people enjoying their lives today thanks to him sharing it. Woody’s words are words to live by. And I mean live.

Here’s some of what we get into:

  • His tragic accident and it’s repercussions
  • His rehab journey and what it taught him
  • Relearning to live in a different way
  • His journey to becoming a safety trainer and the evolution of his business CNB Safe
  • Compo mentality and how it changes people
  • The value of the why factor in safety training
  • Looking at the positive and changing your mentality
  • The importance of being proactive in safety
  • The joys of murderball, and more
