My old high school in the small mining town of Cobar had a slogan: Cobar kids can. My guest on this episode was definitely one of those Cobar kids who could, Matt Harland. From a kid who wasn’t interested in much, he’s gone on to an incredible career that’s taken him from studying engineering to the copper mines of Mount Isa to completing an MBA in Denmark, and then travelling the world promoting it. All that and more for a guy who is still only in his twenties. His story is truly inspirational for those starting out or kicking on.
Here’s some of what we cover in this chat:
- His journey from uninspired Cobar boy to engineering grad
- Why education is so important to him
- How he ended up in the copper mines of Mount Isa and the lessons learned
- The value of mentors, formal and informal, in life
- How a natural curiosity about business led him to an MBA in Denmark
- Thoughts on Scandinavia and some funny stories
- Being paid to travel the world promoting the MBA program
- Taking big (calculated) risks in work and in life
- A look at his latest role for a major multi-national
- Thought-provoking ideas for marketing mining to top talent
