Michael Worthington had a similar upbringing to many of us in the mining industry. Having been raised in a mining town, he left school early and began his apprenticeship, set for a tough but rewarding life among our fellow miners.
But he did what only a few of us do, and broke off and started his own business. Worthy Parts, which Michael founded along with his wife, now operates as a platform for parts, machinery and professional services across the mining and construction industries in Australia.
On the latest episode of Full Production, Michael and I had a talk about what pushed him to leave his work as a tradesman and start his own business, as well as his top advice for any aspiring entrepreneurs in the industry.
We also talk about:
- Why planning is your best friend in business
- How to understand other people’s strengths and weaknesses to help your business grow
- How you can use social media marketing — even in the mining industry
- Why you shouldn’t take rejection personally
- The importance of going out to meet clients
- How to keep yourself resilient in the face of industry downturns
- Why you shouldn’t value some clients more than others
- Michael’s belief in mining industry karma
