With so much talk about the downsides of mining on small communities these days, it’s great to bring you a positive story for a bit of counterbalance. My guest on this episode of Full Production is Barry Knight. Many would say the Knight family is the closest thing to royalty in the mining community of Cobar in far west New South Wales. The first Knights arrived there in 1871, and they’ve added more than their fair share of colour to the town’s history ever since.
Barry is no exception. And we’ll hear about some of his exploits in this episode. But it’s really about his passion project – The Cobar Miners’ Memorial project – that’s the focus. The project, Barry’s absolute commitment to it, and how the Cobar community has got behind it, is a fantastic story of a town remembering its history and how it benefits the present and the future. It’s a really uplifting story.
Here’s some of what Baz and I chat about in this episode:
- What’s driving him to get the Memorial off the ground
- His family’s fascinating history and links to Cobar
- The importance of remembering those who lost their lives in mining
- Background to the Memorial and how it’s progressing
- How changes in the mining industry practices affect communities
- How we can help revive mining communities
- Tom Knight: Cobars greatest rugby league player?
- How to get involved with the Cobar Miners’ Memorial project
