On the latest episode of the Full Production podcast, I have the opportunity to talk to John Claus, a close friend and mentor who has spent more than 28 years in the industry. John has worked as foreman, superintendent and in plenty of other positions at some of Australia’s most prolific mining sites. With a firm emphasis on safety, John understands what it takes to make sure that mining sites are well-balanced work environments for those working beneath him.
John and I chat about his long career in mining and the lessons he’s learned along the way, leading to his current position as General Manager at MSD Mining Solutions. He shares with me how mining was always in his blood, and how he knew from a young age that this was the industry for him. As too many people nowadays are drawn to mining because of the money, John is one of those rare people who is genuinely passionate about the work he does.
We also talked about:
- The importance of embracing challenges
- The accident that taught John an important lesson
- How to recruit good workers from other industries
- Why middle management is really responsible for keeping a site happy
- The perks of shift bossing
- How to make sure your workers succeed in their careers
- How to create an atmosphere of both respect and camaraderie
- What John is nervous about in the industry
